Is it better to have male or female rats. If you ever wish to introduce more to the group females are normally easier however it is possible with both sexes. To be honest rats are what YOU make them handle them often and they will not be aggressive to you love them and they will love you forever regardless of being male or female. I personally prefer female rats the difference between them are that females tend to be more active engaging with you and smaller.
The boys are calmer less active and bigger the problem with boys are that as they get older they get into more intense fights which can be worrying. And female rats are more energetic stereotypically. This is what Ive heard.
However you may have scent issues with boy rats. Boy rats also tend to get bigger in size while female rats remain small unless they give birth in which case they tend to get a lot bigger. Female rats tend to be more active.
Male rats tend to get lazy as they mature. Rats are a very good choice. I recommend girls were on our second set of girlies. Females are less smelly and more interactive with humans however they are more prone to cancer something rats suffer.
Males are more lazy smellier but are less likely to get cancer. Rats can be housed in pairs although a trio or more often live in better harmony as they create their own social network. Pairs of rats can sometimes get agitated with one another and will tend to show dominant behaviour.
Time spent out of the cage and fun training can help prevent this. Its usually best to keep rats in same-sex groups. However males can be castrated so they can be mixed with females if they dont bond well with other male rats.

Male rats are called bucks females are called does. There are differences between the sexes but both make great pets. It just depends on what you personally want from your rats.
Be aware the following descriptions are generalisations only. There are always exceptions to the rule. You can have up to 6 male rats living in the same space given you have a big cage like the one mentioned before.
More than that isnt advisable simply because they would not have enough space to live comfortably. So a bigger one or another cage would be the solution here. Less likely to develop tumors and cancer which is the reason that many pet stores claim to only sell male rats.
Some people believe that males smell more than females. I havent found this to be true at all. My females being more curious often get their food on them and get dirtier but neither gender is more smelly.
My adult males were also easier to potty train so they tend to smell better for that reason but I dont think one gender is better. Male rats can impregnate a female as young as 5 weeks although that is not common. They are able to breed for most of their lives.
Breeding older males is common. There are times when it is even preferable to wait to better determine health temperament and longevity.
